What the code and guidelines say
Code means the International Residential Code 2021 (IRC); local codes can be stricter. NKBA guidelines are recommendations, not law.
| What | Rule | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Floor area | no minimum | IRC 2021, utility space is not habitable space (R202) |
| Ceiling height | at least 6 ft 8 in | IRC 2021, R305.1, laundry rooms |
| Standard laundry room | No public source yet | we found no survey of room sizes |
| Space for washer and dryer | No public source yet | each appliance maker publishes its own |
Minimum size by code
The International Residential Code defines habitable space as space for living, sleeping, eating or cooking, and names utility spaces as not habitable (R202). A laundry room is a utility space, so the 70 sq ft and 7 ft rules for rooms do not apply. Its ceiling must be at least 6 ft 8 in (R305.1).

Is there a standard laundry room size?
We found no public, neutral source for a standard laundry room size. Washers and dryers differ per model, so measure your machines, the space to open their doors and the room to stand in front of them.
