Draw this room in the editor

The editor opens with this room, inside sizes and wall height, ready to draw the rest of the home.

No default from us: there is no neutral source for roll sizes. Use the numbers on your label.

  • Area first, then sq ft
  • Check the label on the roll

Divide the width of the room by the roll width and round up: that is the number of strips. Multiply by the length of the room for the length off the roll, and by the roll width for the square feet you buy. Divide by 9 for square yards. Updated · How we calculate

How we calculate

How we calculate

The floor area comes from our calculation core: length times width, exactly as for a room. Carpet comes off a roll in one width, so you buy whole strips. We try both directions and take the one that needs the least carpet.

We found no public, neutral source for roll sizes, so the calculator has no default number: type the numbers from the label or ask the store. Seams run along the roll; ask your installer where they go and how much to add for pattern matching.

Before you buy

Before you buy

  • Ask for the roll width

A carpet can come in more than one roll width. The store can tell you which widths yours has.

  • Mind the seams

A wider roll can mean fewer seams. Ask your installer where the seams go before you order.

  • Measure into doorways

Measure to the middle of the doorway, and include closets the carpet runs into.

Questions

About carpet. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

How much carpet do I need for a room?

Divide the width of the room by the roll width and round up for the number of strips. Multiply by the length of the room for the length off the roll, and by the roll width for the square feet you buy.

How do I turn square feet into square yards?

Divide the square feet by 9. One square yard is 3 × 3 ft.

What roll width should I use?

The width of your carpet, from the label or the store. We found no public, neutral source for standard roll widths, so the calculator has no default.

Does the calculator add extra for pattern matching?

No. Patterned carpet can need more; ask your installer how much.
