How we calculate

How we calculate

We found no public, neutral source for how much extra tile to buy, so we give no rule. The calculator starts at 10%, our own starting value; change it to what your installer advises.

The square feet come from our calculation core: length times width. The coverage per box is printed on the box, in square feet.

Plan where the tiles go

Plan where the tiles go

This calculator counts tile for one floor. To see the tile in your plan, open the room in the editor and pick a tile under Floor with Change: the plan shows it with its real look at true size.

For a shower or a backsplash, tile a wall in bands up to a height, each band with its own tile size. Doors and windows come off, and the card of the wall counts the tiles per band.

Before you buy

Before you buy

  • Count the cuts

Large tiles and diagonal layouts give more offcuts. Ask your installer how much extra to take.

  • Same batch

Buy all tiles from one batch: color can differ between batches.

  • Keep a few

Keep some spare tiles for repairs later.

How many boxes of tile do I need?

Take the square feet of the floor, add your extra for cuts, and divide by the square feet printed on the box. Round up to a whole box.

How much extra tile should I buy?

We found no public, neutral source for a rule, so we do not give one. The calculator starts at 10%, our own starting value; ask your installer for your layout.

Yes. Enter the width of the wall as the length and the tiled height as the width.
