  • Check the label on the roll

Divide the distance around the room by the roll width for the number of strips. Divide the roll length by one strip (the wall height, plus 4 in to trim, plus the pattern repeat), and round down for the strips per roll. Divide the strips by that and round up. Updated · How we calculate

How we calculate

How we calculate

The wall area comes from our calculation core: the distance around the room times the wall height. For wallpaper the strips count more than the area: each strip is one wall height plus 4 in (10 cm) to trim at the ceiling and the floor, plus the pattern repeat, and a roll only holds whole strips. The editor counts the same way.

We found no public, neutral source for roll sizes, so the calculator has no default number: type the numbers from the label or ask the store. We do not take off doors and windows: the paper around them is cut from strips we already count.

About wallpaper. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

Divide the distance around the room by the roll width for the number of strips. Work out how many whole strips fit on one roll, then divide and round up.

What is a pattern repeat?

The height after which the pattern starts again. Each strip must start at the same point in the pattern, so the calculator adds the repeat to every strip.

Should I take off doors and windows?

The calculator does not. The paper above and below a door or window is cut from strips you already count.

What roll size should I use?

The width and length on your label. We found no public, neutral source for standard roll sizes, so the calculator has no default.
