Closet sizes

The building code sets no minimum closet size. Under the IRC a closet is not habitable space, so the 70 sq ft and 7 ft rules for rooms do not apply. We found no public source for a standard closet depth, so we do not give one.

A walk-in closet of 6 by 8 feet with rods and shelves on two sides, drawn to scale.

In short

  • Code minimum: none, a closet is not habitable space (IRC R202).
  • Standard depth: no public source yet, so we do not give one.
  • Measure a closet as its own part of the room.

What the code and guidelines say

Code means the International Residential Code 2021 (IRC); local codes can be stricter. NKBA guidelines are recommendations, not law.

Minimum size by code

The International Residential Code defines habitable space as space for living, sleeping, eating or cooking, and names closets as not habitable (R202). The minimum area and width for rooms therefore do not apply to a closet.

The IRC also does not require a closet in a bedroom, although many buyers expect one.

Closet depth and walk-in sizes

The depths you find online come from companies that sell closet systems. We did not find a public, neutral source, so we show none. Measure your own clothes on a hanger and the space you need to reach them.

We found no public, neutral source for a standard closet depth, only numbers from companies that sell closet systems, so we do not give one.

Does a bedroom need a closet?

The IRC does not require one, but many buyers and listing services expect a closet in a bedroom.

How do I measure a closet?

Measure wall to wall at floor level inside the closet, the longest way and the widest way, and add it to the room it belongs to.
