What the code and guidelines say
Code means the International Residential Code 2021 (IRC); local codes can be stricter. NKBA guidelines are recommendations, not law.

Minimum size by code
A living room is a habitable room. The International Residential Code asks for at least 70 sq ft of floor area, with no side shorter than 7 ft (sections R304.1 and R304.2), and a ceiling of at least 7 ft (R305.1). Local codes can be stricter.
Under a sloped ceiling, parts lower than 5 ft do not count toward the 70 sq ft (R304.3).

Is there an average living room size?
We looked for a public survey of living room sizes in US homes and did not find one. Rather than guess, we draw real sizes to scale, so you can compare them with your own room.
