What counts

What counts in the square footage

Upstairs in the loft plan, 115 sq ft sits under 5 ft, and the two storage spaces behind the knee walls add 206 sq ft of unfinished attic. Neither one counts toward the finished area.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Is 1500 sq ft small for a house?

It is below the size of most new houses in the US, but far from tiny. A 24x24 house on one floor has 576 sq ft, well under half of that.

How many bedrooms fit in a 24x24 house?

How much does a loft add to a 24x24 house?

In our loft plan the upper floor adds 256 sq ft of finished area. The rest of that floor is too low or unfinished.
