Living room layouts with dimensions

Start with the sofa: put it facing the focal point (the TV or a window), set the coffee table in front of it and leave a path around the group, not through it. In our three drawings the coffee table is 17 to 18 in from the sofa and the TV 6′ 7″ to 11′ 7″ away.

Floor plan of a 16 × 12 ft living room: a sofa facing a TV stand on the window wall, a coffee table between them and an armchair on the side.

Three living room layouts

Three living rooms drawn by the editor with a three-seat sofa (84 in). The table gives the floor inside the walls and two distances we measured in each drawing: from the front of the sofa to the coffee table and to the TV stand.

How to lay out a living room

  1. Measure the room and mark the doors, windows, radiators and outlets. They decide where the sofa can go.
  2. Choose the focal point: the TV, a fireplace or the view. The sofa faces it.
  3. Place the sofa first, then the coffee table in front of it and the chairs on the sides.
  4. Keep the walking path from the door around the seating group, not between the sofa and the TV.
  5. Check it in 3D before you move anything heavy.

Long, narrow or awkward rooms

A long room works best as two zones. Our 20 × 16 ft room has the seating at one end and a table for six at the other, with the door between them, so nobody walks through the conversation.

In a square room, face the seats inward. The 16 × 14 ft conversation layout puts the sofa against one wall and two armchairs facing each other across the coffee table.

How it works in the editor

  1. Open one of the living rooms below, or draw your own room with its doors and windows.
  2. Turn on Interior and drag a sofa, armchairs, a coffee table and a TV stand from the library. Each has its real size.
  3. Select a piece to set its width and depth, rotate it 90°, put it back to the wall or swap it for a corner sofa.
  4. Look at the room in 3D to check the paths, then share the plan or export a PNG or PDF.

Questions

Living room layout: questions

About living room layouts. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

How should I arrange my living room furniture?

Face the sofa toward the focal point, put the coffee table in front of it and the chairs on the sides, and keep the walking path around the group.

How far should a sofa be from the TV?

There is no fixed rule; it depends on the screen. In our drawings the front of the sofa is 6′ 7″ to 11′ 7″ from the TV stand. Draw your own room and try it before you buy.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

Close enough to reach, far enough to walk past. In our three layouts the gap is 17 to 18 in.

How do I lay out a long, narrow living room?

Split it into two zones, like seating at one end and dining or a reading corner at the other, with the path along one side.
