Apartment floor plans

An apartment is a home on one level inside a larger building, with neighbors on one or more sides and a shared hall or stair. Our two examples measure 1,200 and 555 sq ft inside the walls. See the apartment floor plans below, drawn to scale and measured room by room.

Small 1 bed apartment

Only one wall has windows, so the living room and the bedroom share it. Kitchen, bath and a laundry closet sit in the inner half near the front door, where daylight matters least.

What counts

What counts in the square footage

Walls shared with a neighbor or the corridor are thicker and have no windows. Inside the walls the corner unit has 1,200 sq ft; measured to the outside, as ANSI Z765 does for a house, it would be 1,340 sq ft. Ask which one a listing uses.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Questions

Apartment floor plans: questions

About these apartment plans. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

How do I find the floor plan for my apartment?

Ask the landlord or the property manager first; many keep a plan of each unit. If there is none, measure each room with a tape and draw it in the editor, and the areas add up as you go.

What are the most common floor plans in apartments?

Studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units make up most of the market. Within those, the main choices are where the bedrooms sit, side by side or split, and whether the unit has windows on one side or two.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
