What counts

What counts in the square footage

On two floors, both count: the two-story plan has 1,792 sq ft over both floors, measured to the outside of the walls. The front porch is outdoors and never counts, on either plan.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Questions

Narrow lot house plans: questions

About these narrow lot house plans. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

How wide is a narrow lot house?

Most are 20 to 30 feet wide, so they fit a lot of about 25 to 40 feet once the side setbacks are taken off. Check your local setbacks before you choose a width.

How is a narrow lot house different from a townhouse?

A townhouse shares its side walls with the neighbors. A narrow lot house stands alone, so it can have windows and a door on the sides, like the side entry of our one-story plan.

What is a good layout for a narrow house?

Run the stair and the small rooms along one side wall and keep the main rooms open across the width, so daylight reaches from front to back.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
