What counts

What counts in the square footage

Under a steep Tudor roof the edges of the upper rooms are low. In the story and a half plan, 292 sq ft is under 5 ft and drops out of the total, and 204 sq ft of attic storage is not finished.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Questions

Tudor house plans: questions

About these tudor house plans. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

What makes a house a Tudor?

A steep roof with at least one gable facing the street, decorative half timbering, a large chimney often on the front, and groups of tall windows with small panes. The entry is often in a small gabled porch.

What are common Tudor house problems?

Rooms under the steep roof lose space near the eaves, the many roof valleys need good flashing, and old half timbering can hide water damage. Check the upper floor area: the low part does not count.

Is there a small Tudor house plan?

Yes. The story and a half plan on this page has 1,814 sq ft that counts, with three bedrooms on a footprint of about 42 by 28 ft.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
