Blueprint maker

A blueprint today is a floor plan drawn to scale, with dimensions, room names and a title block. Squaremetry draws one while you draw or type the rooms, prints it at 1/4″ = 1′ on paper up to ARCH D (24 × 36), and exports a DXF with 5 layers for CAD.

  • To scale, with dimensions
  • PDF with a title block
  • DXF with layers

Drawing is free. A clean export costs $5 per home, or Pro from $24 a month.

The blueprint of a small two-bedroom house drawn in the editor: two bedrooms and a bath on the left, the living room and kitchen on the right, with outside dimensions and the area of every room (1,002.3 sq ft inside the walls).

What a house blueprint shows

Builders, permit offices and contractors read the same things on a floor plan blueprint. The editor draws all of them from one model, so a wall you move changes the dimensions, the areas and every sheet.

  • Walls with their real thickness, exterior and interior apart.
  • Doors with their swing, windows and openings.
  • Dimensions outside the house: each room along that side, then the total.
  • Room names with the area of each room.
  • The scale, the paper, the date and the project in a title block.

Blueprint scale and paper size

The PDF export offers the scales below, or Fit to page. Paper: Letter, A4, A3, and on large paper Tabloid (11 × 17), A2, A1, ARCH C (18 × 24), ARCH D (24 × 36), where every plan page gets a title block. When a plan does not fit at your scale, the PDF fits it to the page and says so.

In Sheets you lay out your own sheets, with 1″ = 1′ and 1/2″ = 1′ for details and paper up to ARCH E (36 × 48).

DXF for CAD, with layers

A DXF from Squaremetry opens in any CAD program with each kind of line on its own layer, so the drafter can switch them on and off. Furniture, stairs and room dividers get their own layers when the plan has them.

A full drawing set in one PDF

Tick Drawing set in Export and you get one PDF with a cover and the list of sheets, then the floor plan, furniture plan and electrical plan per floor, elevations, a section and the walls of each room. Every sheet has a title block, and the sheets always come from the plan as it is now.

How to find the blueprint of your house

  1. Ask the building or permit office of your city or county for the plans filed with the permits for your address.
  2. Ask the builder, the architect or the previous owner; check the papers from the sale.
  3. No luck? Measure each room and draw it again: type the rooms with their sizes and the editor puts the plan together.
  4. Have an old paper plan? Upload a photo or PDF of it, set the scale and trace the walls.

How it works in the editor

  1. Draw the walls, or type the rooms as a list with their sizes, like Kitchen 12 x 14. Walls snap together and every room gets its area.
  2. Choose Door or Window and click on a wall. Each door shows its swing; pick single, double, sliding or pocket.
  3. Choose Dimensions at the bottom right: Outside puts a chain of room sizes and the total on each side.
  4. Open Export, pick PDF, then the paper and the scale, like 1/4″ = 1′. Every plan page on large paper gets a title block.
  5. For CAD, export a DXF: walls, openings, rooms, text and dimensions each on their own layer.

About blueprints. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

How do I create my own blueprints?

Measure each room, draw the walls to scale, add doors and windows, and put the dimensions on. In Squaremetry you can type the rooms with their sizes; the editor draws the walls, shows each area and puts the dimensions outside the house.

What is the best free program to create blueprints?

One that draws to scale and lets you export without redrawing. Squaremetry is free to draw and dimension in the browser; a PDF to scale or a DXF costs $5 per home, or comes with Pro from $24 a month.

How much does a blueprint maker cost?

Drawing in Squaremetry is free. A home unlocked for clean exports (PDF to scale, SVG, DXF and the drawing set) costs $5 for 30 days, and your first home is free once per account.

What is a blueprint maker called?

Floor plan software, a floor plan maker or CAD software. True blueprints were blue copies of drawings; today the word means a floor plan to scale, printed as a PDF or opened in CAD as a DXF.

How can I find the blueprint of my house?

Ask the building or permit office for the plans filed with your permits, or ask the builder or the previous owner. If none exist, measure the rooms and draw them again, or upload a photo of an old paper plan and trace it.

Can I use it for a building permit?

You can print the floor plan to scale with dimensions and a title block. What a permit needs differs by place, and many need drawings by a licensed professional; check with your local building office first.
