How much space furniture needs
Furniture fits on paper and still fails in the room when there is no space to walk, open a drawer or pull out a chair. Every piece in the library carries the free space it needs and where that number comes from; Fits in counts it when it checks your room.

Plan a room layout in five steps
1Measure the room inside the walls, and mark doors, windows, radiators and outlets.
2Draw it to scale, or type the size, so every piece lands at its real size.
3Place the largest piece first: the bed, the sofa or the dining table. It decides the rest.
4Keep the paths clear: from the door to the window, around the bed and behind the chairs.
5Check it in 3D and try a second layout before you buy or move anything.
Colors and a furniture list
Give a sofa, bed, table or cabinet its own color or material, per part it really has. The Furniture list counts every piece per room and for the whole home, with its size.
The same plan in 2D and 3D: move a sofa and both views follow.
Feet and inches or meters; sizes are inside the walls.
Your own pieces: upload a 3D model and place it like any other.

How it works in the editor
1The button above opens the editor with this living room. For your own room, type it as a list with its size inside the walls, like Bedroom 12 x 14, or draw the walls.
2Press F or choose Furniture. Search by name or size, like sofa 84, and pick a piece.
3Click in the room to place it. Drag it, Rotate 90°, or move it with the arrow keys, ¼ inch at a time.
4In the library, choose your room under Fits in. Each piece says whether it fits and how much floor is left, counting the free space it needs.
5Click 3D to look around, or Export for a PDF or PNG of the plan with the furniture on it.

About room layouts. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.
One that draws your room at its real size and uses furniture at real sizes, so what fits on screen fits at home. In Squaremetry, drawing the room, placing furniture and 3D are free without an account; a clean PDF costs $5 per home or comes with Pro.
How can I plan my room layout?
Measure the room inside the walls, draw it to scale, place the largest piece first and keep the paths to the door and window clear. In the editor, every piece carries the free space it needs, and Fits in shows which pieces fit the room you drew.
Is there an app where you can design a room for free?
Squaremetry runs in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone, without installing anything. Designing a room and looking at it in 3D is free; you pay only for clean exports.
Can I take a picture of a room and redesign it?
Not from a photo of the room itself. You can trace a photo or PDF of a floor plan, or type the room size, and then furnish that plan to scale.
Can ChatGPT redesign my room?
A chat assistant can suggest a layout in words, but it does not draw your room to scale. You can connect an AI assistant to Squaremetry: it can measure rooms and open them in the editor, where you place the furniture yourself.
How much space should be around furniture?
It depends on the piece. In our library: a coffee table 14″ all around; a queen bed 30″ at each side, at least 24″; a desk 48″ in front, at least 36″. The editor shows the number for every piece.
